Aims of Module
To enable the student to demonstrate safe, woman centred midwifery care which complies with NMC requirements for entry to the midwifery part of the professional register.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate professional behaviour in maternity care.
2 Present evidence of independence as an effective communicator with women, their families, members of the multi-professional team and staff from other agencies where relevant.
3 Demonstrate achievement of NMC competencies required for entry to the midwifery part of the professional register.
4 Analyse a range of relevant knowledge underpinning midwifery care.
5 Deliver woman centred care which engages women, actively promotes normality and assesses risk within a range of contexts.

Safe, holistic and effective midwifery care; Confident and competent communication in a range of forms; Effective teamworking within the multiprofessional maternity care team and other relevant agencies; Midwifery decision making; Critique of risk assessment in maternity care; Facilitating women's choices; Empowering women; The midwife as an effective advocate for women; UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative; Reflective practice; Lifelong learning.

Module Delivery
Teaching, learning and clinical practice experience in a variety of practice placement areas in a University approved environment.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This is a clinical practice module. The student will undertake 37.5 hours per week in practice settings for normally 24 weeks (Full Time) or normally 34 weeks (Flexible Route). These will span a variety of midwifery practice placements.
