Aims of Module | |||

To enable the students to become independent and confident in meeting Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards of proficiency by demonstrating safe, woman-centred midwifery care with indirect supervision. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Demonstrate independent evidence-based practice to achieve the proficiencies as detailed in NMC Standards of Proficiency for Midwives (NMC, 2019). |
2 | Collaborate with multidisciplinary and multiagency colleagues to provide appropriate care and facilitate practice change. |
3 | Apply graduate attributes of resourcefulness, flexibility and strength, self-care, critical and strategic thinking, emotional intelligence, and leadership skills required for professional midwifery practice. |
4 | Demonstrate professional development, recognising how it can contribute to others' development and education, including women, other students and colleagues. |
5 | Support quality improvement methodology to provide safe, effective, respectful, kind and compassionate midwifery care for women, newborn infants and their families. |

Preparation for newly qualified practice; The NMC proficiencies for part 3 which are grouped under six domains: (1) Being an accountable, autonomous, professional midwife; (2) Safe and effective midwifery care: promoting and providing continuity of care and carer; (3) Universal care for all women and newborn infants; (4) Additional care for women and newborn infants with complications; (5) Promoting excellence: the midwife as colleague, scholar and leader; (6) The midwife as skilled practitioner. |

ADDITIONAL NOTES |
---|
In this clinical practice module students will undertake 40 hours per week in practice settings for 22 weeks. There are two Practice Learning Experience (PLE) blocks, each with an assessment opportunity. To complete the module, student must have attended at least 70% of each allocated PLE to be assessed, achieve a pass grades in all PLEs and achieve all stage 3 NMC proficiencies. This module is underpinned by the UNICEF baby friendly Initiative. |
