Aims of Module | |||

To develop the student's knowledge of the pathophysiology and management of paediatric, obsteteric and gynaecological emergencies typically encountered by the paramedic in hazardous environments and in the wider context of paramedic practice. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Discuss the anatomical and physiological differences in paediatrics, and the pregnant woman and how these can impact on physical presentation. |
2 | Manage normal labour within the scope of paramedic practice. |
3 | Demonstrate the management of an obsteteric or gynaecological emergency within the scope of paramedic practice. |
4 | Demonstrate the effective and safe management of a paediatric emergency within the scope of paramedic practice. |
5 | Justify the strategies used in the management of normal labour, obstetric and gynaecological emergencies, surgical and trauma emergencies. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Anatomical and physiological differences in pregnancy; normal pregnancy and labour; assessment of the pregnant woman; abnormalities in pregnancy and labour; resuscitation in pregnancy and the newborn; paediatric body systems; paediatric patient assessment; non-accidental injuries; sudden unexplained death in infants; paediatric conditions; paediatric trauma; paediatric resuscitation including foreign body airway obstruction and airway management; legislation around children; gynaecological emergencies; protection of vulnerable groups, protecting children. |
