Aims of Module
To develop the student's knowledge of pathophysiology and management of key medical and surgical emergencies encountered by paramedics in hazardous environments and in the wider context of paramedic practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain the pathophysiology of medical and surgical conditions pertinent to paramedic practice.
2 Appropriate and effectively manage a range of simulated medical and surgical conditions pertinent to paramedic practice including demonstrating cardiac life support skills.
3 Discuss the role of paramedics and the wider multidisciplinary team in a variety of care pathways relevant to medical and surgical patients.
4 Discuss how clinical, socioeconomic and environmental factors affect the management of medical and surgical emergencies seen in paramedic practice.

Indicative Module Content
Medical assessment and history taking; communication; pain management; allergies; anaphylaxis; fluid maldistribution; sepsis; acute coronary syndromes; cerbrovascular accidents; seizures; diabetic emergencies; acute abdomen; vulnerable patient groups; overdoses and poisoning; referral pathways; environmental emergencies; abnormal psychology/ mental health issues; gastro intestinal and urinary emergencies; peri arrest management; advance cardiac life support; 12 lead ECG interpretation; environmental factors in resuscitation; special circumstances in resuscitation; paediatric life support; recognition of death; end of life care; do not resuscitate; breaking bad news; foreign body airway obstruction; non traumatic chest pain; hypothermia.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered by a blended approach of online and face-to-face methods. The student will be expected to attend for 5 days of face-to-face teaching at a designated site.
