Aims of Module
To enable the student to develop an understanding of the theories, principles and concepts that underpin public health in the context of paramedic practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain the fundamental concepts and principles of public health working.
2 Describe public health and health promotion and associated concepts.
3 Evaluate a range of strategies and approaches to maintain and promote public health in relation to paramedic practice.
4 Discuss key public health issues relevant to paramedic practice.
5 Explain the role of evidence based practice in public health.

Indicative Module Content
Models of health promotion; access to services and practice guidelines; ethics; multi agency, inter-professional and partnership working; social policy; vulnerability; poverty; inequalities; social exclusion; public health; health promotion; epidemiology; demography; determinants of health; sociology of health and illness; health needs assessment; behaviour change; culture, ethnicity and diversity; strengths based approaches; hierarchies of needs; assets approach; globalisation; pathways of care and service delivery; health and well-being, public health issues and priorities for example: ageing, dementia, communicable diseases, drug misuse, alcohol misuse, smoking, obesity and mental health; relevant legislation; academic writing and reflective skills: literature searching, writing analytically, referencing; evidence based practice.
