To enable the student to develop an understanding of the theories, principles and concepts that underpin public health in the context of paramedic practice. |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Explain the fundamental concepts and principles of public health working. |
2 | Describe public health and health promotion and associated concepts. |
3 | Evaluate a range of strategies and approaches to maintain and promote public health in relation to paramedic practice. |
4 | Discuss key public health issues relevant to paramedic practice. |
5 | Explain the role of evidence based practice in public health. |
Indicative Module Content |

Models of health promotion; access to services and practice guidelines; ethics; multi agency, inter-professional and partnership working; social policy; vulnerability; poverty; inequalities; social exclusion; public health; health promotion; epidemiology; demography; determinants of health; sociology of health and illness; health needs assessment; behaviour change; culture, ethnicity and diversity; strengths based approaches; hierarchies of needs; assets approach; globalisation; pathways of care and service delivery; health and well-being, public health issues and priorities for example: ageing, dementia, communicable diseases, drug misuse, alcohol misuse, smoking, obesity and mental health; relevant legislation; academic writing and reflective skills: literature searching, writing analytically, referencing; evidence based practice. |
