Aims of Module
To facilitate the student's application of the sciences to holistic Mental Health Nursing.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain the epidemiology and aetiology of a range of mental disorders and physical conditions.
2 Outline the pathophysiology and psychopathology and related clinical features of selected mental disorders and physical conditions.
3 Discuss the nursing management of patients with a range of diagnoses and needs.
4 Delineate the modes of action, contra-indications, effects, side effects and toxic effects of common physical forms of treatment used in relation to mental disorder.
5 Explore the issues and challenges that can arise for patients in relation to the treatment of mental disorder.

Indicative Module Content
Genetic influences on mental health and illness; Relevant anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, psychopathology; Epidemiological trends, classification systems, aetiology, nature or nurture debate, co-morbidity; Mental disorders across the life span & at key transition points - definitions, clinical features, impact on quality of life and overall health, e.g. anxiety disorders, mood disorders, perceptual disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, addiction and substance misuse, dementia, etc. physical conditions, e.g. diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer, COPD, malnutrition, infections & immunological conditions, etc. learning disability & mental disorder; Co-morbidity and managing and promoting physical health, activity & exercise across the lifespan; Challenging contexts and behaviours; Person-centred, therapeutic nursing management and care, partnership, inclusiveness, joint decision making; Assessment, safety, risk management, positive risk taking, observation and engagement strategies, breakaway techniques, ASIST; Physical forms of treatment, e.g. pharmacological, poly-pharmacy, ECT; Issue relating to care & treatment, e.g. legal & ethical.
