Aims of Module
To enable the student to gain professional confidence and demonstrate safe, woman centred midwifery care with indirect supervision where appropriate.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate professional behaviour in maternity care.
2 Demonstate confidence as an effective communicator with women, their families and members of the multi-professional team.
3 Demonstrate confidence and competence in undertaking skills as specified within the RGU Midwifery Skills Passport.
4 Apply relevant knowledge underpinning midwifery care.
5 Provide woman centred care which engages women, promotes normality and assesses risk within a range of contexts.

Indicative Module Content
Safe and effective woman centred care; Intermediate communication skills; Promoting normality; Clinical risk assessment; Holistic midwifery care of women, including those at higher risk; Care of women during clinical midwifery/obstetric emergency situations; Care of the ill baby; UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative; Application of theory to practice; Safe administration of medicines; Reflective practice; Lifelong learning.

Module Delivery
Teaching, learning and clinical practice experience in a variety of practice placement areas in a University approved environment.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This is a clinical practice module. The student will undertake 37.5 hours per week in practice settings for normally 22 weeks (Full time) or normally 17 weeks (Flexible Route). These will span a variety of midwifery practice placements.
