Aims of Module
To enable the student to analyse and apply relevant knowledge to improve maternal and family health during the childbirth continuum.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Recognise the midwifery challenges of addressing public health agendas and improving holistic health amongst women and families.
2 Examine relevant life sciences and specific health care needs which challenge the progression of health during the childbearing continuum.
3 Assess appropriate midwifery care for specific health care needs which challenge the progression of health during the childbearing continuum.

Concepts of health; Dimensions of health; Holism; Health promotion; Health improvement; Health inequalities; Health screening; Anatomy and physiology for the childbearing continuum; Body systems; Pathophysiology; Medical conditions; Obstetric emergencies; Human genetic disorders; Immunology; UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative; Infection control; Pharmacology; Relevant medications; Blood transfusions.
