Aims of Module
To enable the students to evaluate safe and effective midwifery care for women and newborn infants with additional care needs.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Appraise the role of the midwife in providing holistic women centred care that meets the additional care needs of women and families.
2 Apply effective, evidence based approaches to signs of compromise and deterioration in the woman, fetus and newborn infant.
3 Examine the role of collaborative practice across health and social care services for women and families with additional care needs or complications.
4 Demonstrate evidence informed midwifery skills in the management of care for women and infants with additional care needs, escalating when required.

Indicative Module Content
Woman centred care; sensitive care; public health; perinatal mental health; trauma informed care; social vulnerability, inclusion and exclusion; learning disabilities; equalities and inequalities; racism and unconscious bias in maternity care; LGBTI in maternity care; pre-existing medical conditions; common pregnancy complications; infant feeding challenges; continuous fetal monitoring; emergencies in pregnancy and childbirth; medicines management; infection and sepsis; perineal repair; neonatal resuscitation; pregnancy loss and end of life care; family integrated care; clinical decision making; collaborative team working; evidence based practice; clinical skills
