Aims of Module
To enable students to evaluate universal, safe and effective midwifery care for women and newborn infants.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain how midwifery can optimise physiological processes during pregnancy, birth and postpartum period whilst anticipating and preventing complications.
2 Recognise positive and adverse effects of medicines across the childbearing continuum.
3 Illustrate the scope of interdisciplinary care to provide safe and effective individualised care for women, newborn infants and their families.
4 Demonstrate midwifery skills, including examination of the newborn, and understand when referrals for additional care are necessary.

Indicative Module Content
Physiological processes of pregnancy and birth; screening and diagnostic tests; recognition and care planning; collaborative interdisciplinary working; genetics and genomics; pharmacology; fetal development; individualised care; examination of the newborn; newborn and early child development, infant feeding, relationship building and positive family attachment; mental health and wellbeing; public health; health protection; health promotion; women's lived experiences; continuity of carer; parenthood education; sexual and reproductive health; psychology; sociology; clinical skills.
