To enable students to evaluate universal, safe and effective midwifery care for women and newborn infants. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Explain how midwifery can optimise physiological processes during pregnancy, birth and postpartum period whilst anticipating and preventing complications. |
2 | Recognise positive and adverse effects of medicines across the childbearing continuum. |
3 | Illustrate the scope of interdisciplinary care to provide safe and effective individualised care for women, newborn infants and their families. |
4 | Demonstrate midwifery skills, including examination of the newborn, and understand when referrals for additional care are necessary. |

Physiological processes of pregnancy and birth; screening and diagnostic tests; recognition and care planning; collaborative interdisciplinary working; genetics and genomics; pharmacology; fetal development; individualised care; examination of the newborn; newborn and early child development, infant feeding, relationship building and positive family attachment; mental health and wellbeing; public health; health protection; health promotion; women's lived experiences; continuity of carer; parenthood education; sexual and reproductive health; psychology; sociology; clinical skills. |
