Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To equip the student with the necessary knowledge and skills required to provide a first response in out of hospital care, often in difficult contexts, and to assist the paramedic. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Explain key conditions that disrupt normal physiology and anatomy. |
2 | Safely and effectively apply appropriate interventions to deal with illness and injury as appropriate to the scope of practice in the context of out of hospital care. |
3 | Effectively apply principles of risk management in a variety of environments to implement the required intervention as appropriate to basic paramedic practice. |
4 | Use evidence-based research to explain the holistic needs of patients at all stages of life whilst operating within the ethical and legal boundaries of paramedic practice. |
5 | Describe the difference between research and audit and their role in quality improvement. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Anatomy and physiology of key body systems to include respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous, musculoskeletal, gastro, urinary; basic understanding of key conditions and their management; patient assessment; airway management; recognition of ECG rhythms; basic life support and use of emergency adjunct; automated external defibrillation; management and mechanics of trauma; diabetes; sepsis; paediatric care; normal labour and obstetric emergencies; actions of drugs used in first response practice; mental health issues; consent; capacity; clinical governance and relevant legislation; eHealth. Study and exam skills. Validity and reliability of assessment tools, qualitative and quantitative research methods. |

This module will be delivered using a blended approach of online and face-to-face methods. Students will be expected to attend for 3 x one week blocks of face-to-face teaching at a designated site. |
