Aims of Module
To enable the student to gain a foundation level in emergency care.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain infection control and prevention procedures.
2 Demonstrate effective and safe moving and handling and infection control procedures.
3 Effectively use appropriate communication strategies.
4 Demonstrate effective and appropriate safe patient assessment including relevant patient surveys.

Indicative Module Content
Infection prevention and control; universal precautions; sharps safety; clinical waste disposal; moving and handling; moving and handling assessments; moving and handling legislation; anatomy of the spine; causes of back pain; unsafe systems of work; equipment use; risk assessments; communications; communication systems in out of hospital care; radio systems; phonetic alphabet; medical dispatching systems; emergency out of hospital care; introduction to the body; primary and secondary surveys; managing body temperature; oxygen therapy; basic life support of children and adults; unconsciousness; first responder; consent; capacity.

Module Delivery
This module will be delivered using a blended approach of online and face-to-face methods. The student will be expected to attend for 5 days of face-to-face contact at a designated site.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
The student is expected to attend 5 days of mandatory face-to-face contact hours. NB 375 placement hours are to be completed over modules NU1995 & NU1996.
