Aims of Module
To facilitate the student to develop an understanding of the sciences in relation to holistic nursing practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate an understanding of the key life sciences across the lifespan.
2 Explain the relationship between psychosocial sciences and life sciences across the lifespan.
3 Describe human development from conception to old age.
4 Outline basic pharmcological processes in the human body.
5 Explain the relationship between microbiology and nursing.

Indicative Module Content
Pharmacology and how the body uses drugs across the lifespan; Microbiology in relation to infection control; Anatomy, physiology, embryology, genetics, growth and development, the mind e.g. consciousness, awareness, cognitions, perception, body mind relationships; Physical and psychological effects of pregnancy, childbirth and post-natal period; Ageing and the body; A range of psychological and sociological theories relevant to nursing.
