To facilitate the student to develop an understanding of the sciences across the lifespan in relation to paramedic practice. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Describe normal anatomy, physiology and homeostatic mechanisms of human development from conception to old age. |
2 | Describe pathophysiological and psychopathological processes. |
3 | Demonstrate an understanding of the key psychosocial sciences across the lifespan. |
4 | Outline the general principles of drug action. |
5 | Explain microbiology in relation to infection prevention and control. |
Indicative Module Content |

Evidence based practice; Anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, psychopathology, biochemistry, physiology of fetal development, physiology of pregnancy and childbirth; Genetics, cell biology growth and development, homeostasis, microbiology, pharmaceutical modes of action; Social structures, social systems, social class - identity, family structures, diversity; social functions - norms and values, social capital, power control and conflict; Psychological perspectives - psychodynamic, behavioural, cognitive, evolutionary, humanistic; Ontology; Aspects of the mind and behaviour; Psychological development across the lifespan; Contemporary debates e.g. Nature v Nurture. |
