Aims of Module
To introduce students to safe and effective midwifery care for women and newborn infants with additional care needs.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe pre-existing, current and emerging common additional care needs that affect women and newborn infants.
2 Explain psychological and sociological factors that can impact women and families with additional care needs.
3 Recognise the scope of sensitive women centred care to support women and infants with additional care needs.
4 Demonstrate key foundational midwifery skills in initiating care for women and newborn infants with additional care needs.

Indicative Module Content
Holistic assessment; pregnancy related complications; perinatal mental health; late, preterm and small baby; pregnancy loss; infant feeding challenges; neonatal jaundice; social vulnerability, inclusion and exclusion; learning disabilities; equalities and inequalities; racism and unconscious bias in maternity care; LGBTI in maternity care; induction of labour; woman centred care; physiological breech birth; medicine management; introduction to continuous fetal monitoring; introduction to emergencies in pregnancy and childbirth; introduction to neonatal resus; introduction to perineal repair.
