To introduce students to universal, safe and effective midwifery care for all women and newborn infants. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Describe anatomy, physiology and genetics relevant to adolescence, pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. |
2 | Describe psychological and sociological factors during pregnancy and postnatal period. |
3 | Recognise the scope of sensitive, holistic, woman and family centred care. |
4 | Demonstrate key foundational midwifery skills which supports safe, effective care for all women and newborn infants. |

Anatomy and physiology; genetics and genomics; fetal development; normal physiological processes of pregnancy and birth; individualised care; intermittent fetal monitoring; newborn and early child development, infant feeding, relationship building and positive family attachment; mental health and wellbeing; screening and diagnostic tests; public health; health protection; health promotion; women's lived experiences; parenthood education; psychology; sociology; clinical skills |
