Aims of Module
To introduce students to universal, safe and effective midwifery care for all women and newborn infants.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe anatomy, physiology and genetics relevant to adolescence, pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.
2 Describe psychological and sociological factors during pregnancy and postnatal period.
3 Recognise the scope of sensitive, holistic, woman and family centred care.
4 Demonstrate key foundational midwifery skills which supports safe, effective care for all women and newborn infants.

Indicative Module Content
Anatomy and physiology; genetics and genomics; fetal development; normal physiological processes of pregnancy and birth; individualised care; intermittent fetal monitoring; newborn and early child development, infant feeding, relationship building and positive family attachment; mental health and wellbeing; screening and diagnostic tests; public health; health protection; health promotion; women's lived experiences; parenthood education; psychology; sociology; clinical skills
