Aims of Module
To develop a critical understanding of maritime law and the international law of the sea applicable to shipping, seaborn commerce, and new developments on the regulation of the use of vessels, the transportation by sea, and the protection of the marine environment from shipping.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically appraise and discuss knowledgably the relevant developments of maritime law and the international law of the sea.
2 Critically discuss and evaluate the legal developments of maritime law (i.e. wet and dry shipping) including relevant incidents, contracts, and case law.
3 Critically examine the legal and policy developments of maritime law and the law of the sea as they apply to the marine environment, shipping and the offshore energy sector, with specific reference to the UK Continental Shelf, and selected jurisdictions.

Indicative Module Content
Introduction of maritime law - the historical development of Lex Maritima and the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS); Maritime Security, Piracy; Carriage of goods by sea (Hague, Hamburg, Rotterdam Rules)- Dry Shipping (Bills of Lading, Charterparties); Wet Shipping (Salvage, Towage, Ports and Harbours); Seafarers; The roles of key organisations, and players, i.e., Maritime Organisations (IMO, ILO, IMCO, BIMCO); Marine Insurance and Liability;

The module will be delivered in both DL - distance learning format and on FTF on campus via class lectures, seminars; and online interactive sessions using moodle). Relevant Topic Materials will be made available before each session.
