Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To develop an understanding of key aspects of oil and gas law and skills relating to the formation, management and administration of oil and gas contracts and the transactions and procedures typically undertaken in the context of oil and gas activities. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Evaluate and discuss legal and practical issues relevant to the international oil and gas industry including the complex issues arising out of oil and gas contract clauses, the key advantages and disadvantages of international petroleum arrangements |
2 | Accept instructions from a client, advise on the choice of oil and gas agreement, advise client on due diligence during a sale and purchase transaction, prepare and draft appropriate contractual documentation including agreements for the sale, purchase and transfer of oil and gas assets, and agreements for the various phases of the operations, and drafting of other appropriate documentation |
3 | Explain and discuss the procedures for the issue of licences, transfer of assets, and understand the distinction between asset and share purchase and sales, and common form warranties and indemnities |
4 | Advise on procedures in connection with the legal and financial liabilities on companies operating on the UKCS (including decommissioning of offshore installations) |
5 | Understand the key industry contract templates for the various phases of the offshore operations, advise on the more commonly encountered duties and responsibilities of operators and contractors, deal appropriately with any contractual interpretation and understand basic contract administration |

The module is assessed by way of a single assessment component weighted at 100%. Additionally there is a participation requirement which is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Relative to the participation requirement each student is normally required to pass such on-campus activities as identified in the module. Non-submission or non-completion of the competencies will result in an NS grade. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. | |
