Aims of Module
To develop and foster a substantive, contextual and critical understanding of the nature and effect of public international law.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Analyse and critically evaluate the principles, sources and vocabulary of international law.
2 Appraise and discuss the major influencing factors which have determined the scope and nature of international law as a legal system.
3 Evaluate the practical international legal implications of current events.
4 Synthesise relevant doctrinal and policy issues in relation to a contemporary issue.
5 Construct and support a legal argument on issues of contemporary international law.

Indicative Module Content
Examination of history and nature of public international law, the sources of international law, the nature of states, the pre-eminent international organisations, state responsibility, jurisdiction of states, the law of treaties, and international criminal law.

Including: Weekly Lectures, seminars, group discussions, group activities, oral presentations/mooting, directed reading/research, case studies.
