Aims of Module
To enable students generate new knowledge by means of independent investigation of a subject or issue(s) which has practical relevance in law or a cognate field.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Generate a suitable topic for investigation through an extensive review of relevant laws and literature.
2 Critically evaluate a range of appropriate research methods and tools for the collection and analyses of data.
3 Design a piece of research and a feasible plan for execution within a stipulated timescale.
4 Analyse and critically evaluate the results obtained with the work place and professional practice in mind.
5 Produce, at an advanced level, appropriate skills of written communication and presentation.

Indicative Module Content
A research proposal developed as part of GSM010 and GSM011 will form the basis for development of the thesis. Students will work independently, but under supervision to undertake the research and prepare the thesis.

Module Delivery
Students are expected to take full responsibility for their own learning, and will receive guidance and support from their supervisory team, and others as appropriate.

Description: The assessment will consist of a 20,000 word thesis with an oral defence of the thesis.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module Students are eligible for the MRes thesis if they have achieved 120 credits at SCQF level 11 or equivalent, including GSM010,GSM011 and LLM590.
Corequisites for module None.
Precluded Modules None.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This module is available to students who are unable to complete the DLaw for good reasons and therefore opt to exit the programme with research masters (in law) degree.
