On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Critically appraise the broad range of factors that shape international environmental law. |
2 | Critically analyse and explain the major concepts, principles and rules that underpin environmental law. |
3 | Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of international environmental law to be able to apply it in a broad range of contexts. |
4 | Identify, research (from a range of sources) and critically analyse issues pertaining to international environmental law, producing a persuasive, coherent and critical evaluation. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The course will trace the origins and development of international environmental law, the goals and principles underlying the international environmental regime (including sustainable development, the precautionary principle and common but differentiated responsibility), the institutional framework responsible for promoting, developing and administering the regime, key features of the treaty regimes used in environmental regulation as well as enforcement mechanisms employed to try to secure compliance with treaty obligations. Later topics in the course will cover more specialised areas of international environmental law and these include, environmental damage and liability and conservation and biodiversity. The course will conclude with an analytical review of the potential future developments within international environmental law. |
