Aims of Module
To enable students to develop an advanced knowledge and understanding of the legal issues which arise and are dealt with at the initial procurement stage of construction contracts.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Recognise, identify and discuss the general principles of contract law and the law of obligations applicable within the construction industry
2 Identify, evaluate and critically assess key issues relating to the contractual arrangements commonly encountered in the construction industry
3 Appraise the various types and standard forms of construction contracts in common use in the construction industry demonstrating a critical awareness of: (i) the main contractual framework established in the main standard form of construction contract and (ii) the significance of specific contractual terms within a construction contract.
4 Demonstrate an awareness of the content and application of contractual arrangements commonly encountered in the construction sector

Indicative Module Content
The legal issues arising at the procurement and commencement of construction projects such as Principles of Contract Law/Building Contracts in general; an introduction to the Standard forms of construction contract. Issues around procurement routes and particular procurement issues such as subcontracting, bonds and guarantees, novation and assignation and insurance.
