Aims of Module
The aim of this module is to provide students with knowledge of the core aspects of private international law, including jurisdiction, applicable law and the recognition and enforcement of judgments.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Understand and explain the key elements of private international law.
2 Evaluate the importance of international conventions in private international law.
3 Critically analyse the role of private international law within Scotland.

Indicative Module Content
The concept of private international law and its purpose; the key concepts of jurisdiction, choice of law and recognition enforcement of judgments; examination of the main connecting factors used in private international law including domicile, nationality and habitual residence; examination of the use of these concepts in international conventions and European Regulations.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and seminar based module. Lectures provide core module content. Seminars develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning.
