Aims of Module
To develop a critical understanding of environmental law, its regulatory regime and enforcement issues. To provide the students with a specialised knowledge and understanding of a few key sectors of environmental law and their application.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate comprehensive, current and integrated knowledge and understanding of key concepts in environmental law and its development in the UK, the nature of the legal controls over environmental pollution, the operation of environmental regulation and various enforcement mechanisms;
2 Recognise the issues involved in the implementation and enforcement of environmental law;
3 Analyse and apply such knowledge to identify and critically evaluate appropriate regulatory and enforcement strategies;
4 Identify, research (from a variety of sources) and analyse issues in UK environmental law, producing a persuasive, coherent and critical evaluation.

Indicative Module Content
History of environmental law and the philosophies underpinning environmental regulation; sources of environmental law; evolution of administrative controls; the role of SEPA and other agencies; environmental pressure groups and their role; approaches to enforcement and enforcement tools; main legal controls relating to a few key sectors and their operation.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and seminar based module. Lectures provide core module content. Seminars develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning.
