Aims of Module
To enable students to obtain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of Roman Law as a part of the foundations of the Scottish legal tradition, with particular emphasis on the Roman influence on the law of property and obligations within the traditional civil law system.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Explain and analyse the fundamental institutions of Roman private law.
2 Critically evaluate Scotland's place in the European legal tradition.
3 Apply such traditional legal principles to contemporary aspects of Scots law.
4 Explain and apply the main principles of the Roman Law of persons, property, obligations and actions.

Indicative Module Content
Historical introduction, sources of Roman Law, law of persons, law of things: property; law of things, contract; law of things, delict; law of things, other obligations, reception of Roman law

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and seminar based module. Lectures provide core module content. Seminars develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning.
