Aims of Module
To enable students to obtain a working knowledge and understanding of charity law and governance in the UK, including the impact, operation, ethics and regulation of the UK third sector.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Describe and evaluate the main forms of charities and other juristic bodies in the UK third sector.
2 Critically evaluate the legal requirements, from a holistic perspective, for the operations of charities and other juristic bodies of the UK third sector.
3 Demonstrate and evaluate the legal underpinning and understanding of the essential values that are pivotal for the sustenance of charities as well as other juristic bodies of the UK third sector.
4 Critically demonstrate the understanding of a UK charity's regulatory and governance requirements and apply the same to practical situations regarding working in or with anybody, natural or juristic, within the UK third sector.

Indicative Module Content
Introduction to UK Charity Law and the Third Sector; Public Benefit, Charity Governance & Legal Structures; Data Protection; Charity Finance; The Regulators, Employment and Volunteering; Vulnerable Persons; Trading; Trust & Equity, Transparency & Integrity; Risk Exposure & Management; Professional Practice and Ethics of the Charity Lawyer; Dispute Resolution.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and tutorial-based module. Lectures provide core module content. Tutorials develop associated higher-level skills through student centred learning.
