To provide students with a working understanding of Family Law in Scotland and in particular the relationships of Husband and Wife; Civil Partnership; Cohabitees and Parent and Child. |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Consider and analyse the main principles of family law. Critically evaluate and analyse the legal consequences of key family relationships such as marriage, civil partnership, and parent and child. Apply the understanding of the legal consequences of those key family relationships to practical situations. |

Indicative Module Content |
---|
Consideration of the features and legal consequences of marriage, matrimonial breakdown, separation and the grounds for divorce, financial provision on divorce, cohabitation, parentage, parental rights and responsibilities, residence and contact, civil partnership, adoption, permanence orders and the key Human Rights Act 1998 implications of family law. |

This is a lecture and tutorial based module. Recorded lectures provide core module content. Tutorials develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning. In the distance learning mode, in addition, online activities will form part of the module contact time and focus on other parts of the course not covered in tutorials. |

The module is assessed by way of a single assessment component weighted at 100%. Additionally there is a participation requirement which is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Relative to the participation requirement each student is normally required to pass such online activities as identified in the module. Non-submission or non-completion of the competencies will result in an NS grade. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module. | |
