Aims of Module
To provide a foundational framework for considering the impact of crime on society and the way in which social conditions contribute to and cause crime.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Distinguish the different ways in which crime and recidivism impacts individuals, families, communities, and society as a whole. This may involve examining the emotional, social, economic, and psychological consequences of crime
2 Compare crime statistics, patterns, and trends over time, including variations in crime rates across different regions, countries, demographics, and types of offenses
3 Compare how issues of race, class, and gender intersect with crime, including disparities in arrest rates, sentencing, and the experiences of marginalized groups within the criminal justice system

Indicative Module Content
Identifying the key society wide trends and influences behind crime and which exacerbate it, such as issues of gender, race, substance abuse, social deprivation, mental health problems and so on, and introducing students to those. It also examines the experience of the victim of crime.

Module Delivery
This module is delivered through a combination of workshops and tutorials. These will explore different perspectives on the core subject matter, using case studies and real life examples.
