Aims of Module
To develop an understanding of the general principles of constitutional law and their relevance to contemporary society.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Recognise and discuss in depth the sources and scope of the constitution.
2 Explain the devolution settlement and the position of Scotland within the United Kingdom and relationship with European Union.
3 Evaluate the doctrines of the separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty and the rule of law and the role and nature of judicial review.

Indicative Module Content
Sources and scope of constitutional law, doctrines of separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty, and the rule of law. Levels of governance - EU, UK, Scottish and local. Judicial review. Human Rights Act 1998 implications for constitutional law.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and tutorial based module. Lectures provide core module content. Tutorials develop associated higher level skills through student centred learning. In the distance learning mode, in addition, online activities will form part of the module contact time.

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
The module is assessed by way of a single assessment component weighted at 100%. Additionally there is a participation requirement which is assessed on a pass/fail basis. Relative to the participation requirement each student is normally required to pass such online activities as identified in the module. Non-submission or non-completion of the competencies will result in an NS grade. An overall minimum grade D is required to pass the module.
