To develop an understanding of the general principles of constitutional law and their relevance to contemporary society. |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Recognise and discuss in depth the sources and scope of the constitution. |
2 | Explain the devolution settlement and the position of Scotland within the United Kingdom and European Union. |
3 | Evaluate the doctrines of the separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty and the rule of law and the role and nature of judicial review. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
Sources and scope of constitutional law, doctrines of separation of powers, parliamentary sovereignty, and the rule of law. Levels of governance - EU, UK, Scottish and local. Judicial review. Human Rights Act 1998 implications for constitutional law. |
