To provide an introduction to the Criminal Justice system building from the definitional module in semester 1 to see the practical environment and framework of the system |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Describe the different conceptions of criminal justice as they apply in practice |
2 | Define the interaction between the law and the process of investigating and prosecuting crime |
3 | Outline the process and decision making involved in criminal trials and other forms |
4 | Express the application of theories of punishment as they apply in the remedies and results which follow conviction |
5 | Describe how the rules of evidence and procedure interact with the other pressures and influences within the criminal justice process |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
The module will survey the justice process from "doing the crime" to "doing the time" and beyond (and miscarriages of justice), this includes an overview of the legal system with a particular focus on the criminal justice system. This looks at the law and practice of criminal investigations including arrest, prosecution and trial, and prison and other forms of punishment. |

This module is delivered through a combination of workshops and tutorials. These will explore different perspectives on the core subject matter, using case studies and real life examples. |
