Aims of Module
To provide candidates with an understanding of the foundational elements of, and operation of, the Scottish Legal System

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the detail of the various sources of law in Scotland.
2 Explain the jurisdiction and functions of the civil and criminal court system and the roles of persons working in the legal profession.
3 Evaluate the predominant law making bodies which affect the Scottish legal system at Scottish and UK levels and externally, such as the ECHR.

Indicative Module Content
History of the Scottish Legal System; Sources of Law in Scotland; civil and criminal court structure; legal personnel and the legal profession; Scotland and Devolution; Scotland and Human Rights; Legal aspects of Brexit; and impact of the aforementioned on sustainability.

Module Delivery
This is a lecture and tutorial based module. Lectures provide core module content. Tutorials deliver associated highest level skills through student centred learning.
