Aims of Module

The purpose of this module is to support doctoral students in thinking through how to understand and manage the impact of their research on the practice contexts they are engaged in. This will entail an examination of some of the practice-oriented research methods, the literature around the management of change and the creation of wider impact amongst both practice and academic communities as well as the wider public.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Integrate knowledge of social science theory in a practice context.
2. Identify, conceptualise and define a range of strategies for engaging with public, private, community and media groups in order to create and maintain research impact.
3. Demonstrate initiative in the application of knowledge to the design of a research project in order to maximise its impact on specific communities.
4. Demonstrate understanding of management theory and organisational change within a defined context.

Indicative Module Content

Practice-oriented research methods. This will introduce a range of field methods that are closely linked with practice-based research such as action research, participant observation and auto-ethnography.
Organisational change. The students will engage with a range of literature drawn from the fields of organisational behaviour and strategic management which consider how change can be managed in organisations.
Research Impact. As well as the impact generated by research projects for their immediate, organisational contexts, consideration will be given to best practice for creating impact throughout a profession, industry and/or society.

Mode of Delivery

This module will be delivered in a one week block. Delivery will take the form of a mixture of lectures, workshops and group activities.

Assessment will take the form of written coursework which will require the student to develop and assess an impact plan for their own individual research project.
