Aims of Module
To introduce and enable practitioners to extend their scope of practice to include the use of injection therapy.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Demonstrate refined knowledge and understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy
2 Critically evaluate the need for intervention with injection therapy, demonstrating clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills
3 Discuss the contraindications for injection therapy
4 Demonstrate and justify safe and effective aseptic techniques in the application of injection therapy

Indicative Module Content
Aligned with CSP expectations of educational programmes in Injection Therapy for Physiotherapists (3rd edition, 2021): Clinical Knowledge; Functional and surface anatomy related to needle placement, common musculoskeletal peripheral lesions. Clinical Decision-making; evidence base, principles of assessment and diagnosis, differential diagnosis, selection of injection therapy, indications and contraindications. Pharmacology; Principles of pharmacology of the drugs used, adverse reactions, post injection aftercare. Performance of Injection Therapy: Equipment, Safety, Infection Control, Practical application of injections for common peripheral lesions, aseptic techniques, Managing emergencies and complications, and concurrent rehabilitation. Patient Information; Risks and benefits of injection therapy, answering patient questions. Communication; Communicating with patient, Documentation and Record-keeping. Medico-legal; Legal and ethical considerations, Knowledge and understanding of Patient Specific Direction (PSD), Patient Group Direction (PGD), Management of Prescription Only Medicines (POM’s), Storage and disposal of medicines

Module Delivery
Blended delivery comprising on campus, off campus, online learning and workplace learning. This will include Tutorials, Practicals, Keynote Lecturers and Digital Learning Resources.

Components 1, 2 and 3 must all be passed in order to be successful in this module. The grade and is assessed on an A-F basis. To achieve a pass a grade D or above is required.

Module Requirements
Prerequisites for Module A minimum of three years post-registration experience. Provide evidence of current registration with the relevant UK professional body e.g. HCPC/GMC/NMC. Be practicing in a role, or imminently looking to move into a role, in which musculoskeletal injection could be used and be able to access the relevant medicines through a setting-appropriate lawful medicines framework in order to offer injection therapy. Written confirmation from an approved supervisor which should include a doctor and/or qualified injection practitioner to supervise a minimum of 10 injections in clinical practice.
Corequisites for module Valid CPR / Basic Life Support certification. Current certification of vaccination for Hepatitis B (CSP Recommendation and Advisory).
