Aims of Module | |||
---|---|---|---|
To enable students to apply knowledge and skills in the assessment and early stages of psychotherapy treatment with children of different ages, gender and a range of presenting problems. |
Learning Outcomes for Module | |

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
1 | Establish and critically reflect on the management of a psychoanalytic psychotherapy setting and boundaries. |
2 | Discuss and evaluate clinical reasoning in relation to assessment findings and emotional experience within the consulting room and make detailed and accurate recordings. |
3 | Critically analyse, select and justify appropriate methods of assessment with a range of children and young people. |
4 | Critically examine transference phenomena and demonstrate the application of transference and counter-transference in clinical sessions. |
5 | Critically discuss relevant psychoanalytic theories. |
Indicative Module Content |
---|
ACP competency framework; NHS governance; relevant policy and legislation; psychoanalytic theories; adaptation of techniques to specific clinical populations across the lifespan and key transition periods, eg. perinatal, young child, latency, adolescence, parent and family work. |
Module Delivery |
---|
The module will primarily be undertaken in the clinical environment supported by a placement supervisor. In addition the student will undertake directed reading, seminars, lectures and practical workshops. Students undertake placement full time over the course of a calendar year working a 37.5 hour week with 28 days holiday and 8 statutory public holidays. |

There are 2 components of assessment: Component 1 is a clinical report Component 2 - clinical practice which will be assessed on a competency basis against the Association of Child Psychotherapists competency framework. Students are required to pass both components. | |
