Aims of Module
To critically explore the role of epidemiology, health measurement and other data in investigating public health.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically consider the principles, methods and application of epidemiology.
2 Critically interpret and evaluate descriptive and inferential statistics used in epidemiology.
3 Critically examine the role of qualitative and quantitative data and intelligence in shaping population health.
4 Analyse, integrate and synthesise research evidence in relation to population health.

Indicative Module Content
The role of epidemiology in Public Health and in determining the evidence base for establishing population health. Surveys and data sets. Epidemiological models and their application to real world health and disease problems. Health protection. The role of epidemiology in determining the financial impact on health services and informing strategies to reduce economical cost and optimise quality care and management. Basic biostatistics, critical appraisal of epidemiological studies and their application to practice. Narratives of health. Qualitative research methods.

Blended delivery comprising of on campus and online learning and engagement. This will include – Workshops, Tutorials, Seminars, Keynote Lectures and Digital Learning Resources
