Aims of Module
To enable the student to evaluate the role and the adaptation and modification of physiotherapy throughout the patient/client pathway within the current policy framework.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Critically discuss the needs of individuals with complex needs across all age groups and relevant rehabilitation/treatment strategies.
2 Critically discuss and evaluate the adaptations and modifications required for safe and effective management across an individual's treatment pathway.
3 Critically discuss the role of interprofessional collaboration across the patient care pathway for individuals with complex needs.
4 Evaluate current health and social policies in relation to their impact on physiotherapy services and evaluate the relationship between managing risk and assuring quality.
5 Evaluate the implications of evidence based practice in the management of individuals with complex needs.

Indicative Module Content
PROFESSIONAL - The range of settings appropriate for the management of specific client groups. Care and compassion in complex situations. Patient safety initiatives. Equality and diversity, and digital health policies. Disability Act. Ethical and legal aspects of care. Diversity of client groups, ethnicity, cultural competence. Principles of teaching and learning and adaptations for different age groups and populations. Ethics. Awareness of local and national guidelines, standards and policies related to patient care and LTC's. Communication skills required when working with patients, carers and the health and social care team. Modification of practice in different settings and contexts; chronic disability affecting different client groups and its effects on the individual, family and community. Digital health, medical technologies, environmental impact. The roles of voluntary and public sector services. Long term condition holistic management. Death, dying and terminal care. Whole person care. Health promotion. Enablement. Public health and personalisation. Holistic management of patients with multiple conditions. COMPLEX CONDITION ASSESSMENT AND MANAGEMENT - Normal and impaired development from conception to early adulthood. Sociological and psychological factors affecting a functional life at all ages and in relation to conditions/pathologies below. Effects of ageing. Dementia framework. IASP key competencies for the management of chronic pain. Relevant pharmacological and diagnostic interventions in addition to physiotherapy assessment. Children with neurological delay/deficit within the family. Management of common problems of childhood (musculoskeletal, respiratory and neurological). Learning disabilities. Long term falls management and prevention. Vestibular rehabilitation. Integumentary integrity, wound/ulcer care. Burns and plastics. Reproductive health issues and the relevant anatomy and physiology - pelvic health, continence, obstetrics and gynaecological conditions. Mental health - common conditions and provision of service. Polytrauma. Spinal cord injury - long term management. Adaptive equipment. Scoliosis. Oncology. Elite athlete management - Temporospatial, kinetic and kinematic analysis of running gait. Exercise prescription. Vocational rehabilitation - Work fitness and ergonomics; Blue/black flags. Outcome measures. Hydrotherapy approaches and application. Digital health interventions and technologies. Spasticity management. Assessment and rehabilitation of functional neurological disorders and somatization. RESEARCH - Literature search, journal clubs, academic writing, critique and synthesis, evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, systematic reviews

MODULE PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTOR
Explanatory Text
Component 1 (Coursework and Infographic) weighted at 100% of the grade and is assessed on an A-F basis. To achieve a Pass a grade D or above is required + a Pass in component 2 (80%) module attendance).

Prerequisites for Module Successful completion of Stage 1 of MSc Physiotherapy (Pre-Registration) or equivalent.

ADDITIONAL NOTES
This module has an 80% attendance requirement. This is essential in order to develop the professionalism required of a Physiotherapist and to ensure that students are competent for clinical placement.
