| On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to: | |
| 1 | Critically discuss the impact of acute pathologies on individuals with consideration of diversity and inclusivity. |
| 2 | Safely, effectively and professionally apply and evaluate selected assessment and treatment techniques for the management of individuals with acute problems across a range of settings. |
| 3 | Critically evaluate the role of interprofessional working in the holistic management of patients with acute problems. |
| 4 | Critically analyse the evidence base for physiotherapy interventions utilised to manage patients with acute physiotherapy problems. |
| Indicative Module Content |

| PROFESSIONAL - The physiotherapy role within alternative models of care and the interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary team. The delegation of physiotherapy related services to appropriate members of staff. Goal setting. Care and compassion. Infection control policies and procedures, sterile techniques. Bereavement and loss. Ethics and end of life care. Equality and diversity in acute care provision across populations. Psychosocial impact of acute care environments. Critical academic writing and synthesis. Critical review of scientific literature. ACUTE CARE - Surgical, peripheral vascular and cardiothoracic problems including management of amputees (prosthetics, gait analysis and re-education). Effects of anaesthetics. Pharmacology, polypharmacy and drug overdose. Problems commonly seen in acutely unwell patients eg loss of lung volume, sputum retention, reduced exercise tolerance, ventilation/perfusion mismatch. Advanced monitoring (ABGs, ECG interpretation), invasive ventilation. Assessment and treatment skills including - Auscultation; Palpation; Introduction to radiographic image interpretation; Positioning; ACBT; IPPB; MHI; Suction, manual techniques, NIV, O2 therapy and LTOT. Traumatic brain injury. Acute spinal cord injury. Peripheral nerve damage. Acute problems in community settings (falls, effects of ageing). Acute episodes of long-term conditions. REHABILITATION - Assessment and treatment of physiotherapy problems in home settings. Risk assessment and awareness of risk management in the community. Cardiac, vascular and pulmonary rehabilitation. Enablement. Exercise prescription. Effects of aging. RESEARCH - Literature search, journal clubs, academic writing, critique and synthesis, evidence-based practice, clinical guidelines, systematic reviews |

| This module has an 80% attendance requirement. This is essential in order to develop the professionalism required of a Physiotherapist and to ensure that students are competent for clinical placement. |
