Aims of Module
To enable students to critically evaluate hippotherapy practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the principles of hippotherapy practice including the health and safety issues involved.
2 Discuss the principles of safe hippotherapy practice to address a variey of physiotherapy problems.
3 Critically discuss the use of outcome measures, contraindications, treatment plans and care pathways in hippotherapy in relation to patient assessment and treatment.
4 Critically review current hippotherapy literaure and apply this to hippotherapy practice.
5 Reflect on own practice and discuss appropriate personal development in the field of hippotherapy.

Indicative Module Content
Background and principles of hippotherapy, health and safety issues and risk assessment, contraindications and precautions. Special tack and equipment, personal liability insurance, role of the hippotherapy team. Normal human development, postural and motor control and hippotherapy treatment positions. Back riding and the mechanical horse, assessment and treatment of individual patients. Reflection and evaluation of own and peer's hippotherapy practice, organisations involved in the delivery of hippotherapy. Overview of Therapeutic riding and vaulting. Critical review and synthesis of literature, proposal writing.
