Aims of Module
To enable students to critically assess and justify the use of an equine for hippotherapy.

Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1 Discuss the practical and methodological issues following an appropriate assessment of an equine for hippotherapy.
2 Discuss and critically appraise the practical and methodological issues in the application of measurement techniques to the assessment of the equine for Hippotherapy.
3 Integrate knowledge of equine structure and function to the assessment and discuss the choice of equine selected for hippotherapy practice.
4 Critically review relevant literature to support the choice of equine.
5 Justify the selection of an equine for use in hippotherapy.

Indicative Module Content
Observation and overview of Hippotherapy. Horse conformation; assessment and practical analysis. Theory of equine movement, practical analysis of equine movement. Risk assessment. Effects of training on equine movement. Introduction to tack used in Hippotherapy. Effective leading. Safe practice in the equine environment including mounting and dismounting. Horse welfare, behaviour and psychology. Critical appraisal and synthesis of relevant literature.

Module Delivery
Tutorials and workshops. Practical demonstrations and hands-on sessions in the stables and indoor arena using equines.

Prerequisites for Module Honours degree or equivalent in Physiotherapy, Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, registered with the HCPC,member of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding.
