Honours degree in physiotherapy (or equivelant).
Successful completion of Introduction to Pharmacology or equivalent.

Aims of Module

The aim of the module is to enable the student to develop critical knowledge and understanding of the pharmacology associated with medications commonly used in physiotherapy pain management and their safe and effective application.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Appraise the pharmacological principles and theories underpinning pain management in physiotherapy practice.
2. Critically evaluate the pharmacological management of pain in physiotherapy practice.
3. Appraise the ethical, legal and professional implications of pharmacological management of pain in physiotherapy practice.

Indicative Module Content

Mechanisms of pain production
Clinical application of pain management in physiotherapy practice
Analgesics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, adjuvant medications.
The WHO analgesic ladder.
Mechanisms of drug delivery.
Ethical, legal and professional implications to physiotherapy practice.
