Aims of Module

To enable the students to evaluate current and future physiotherapy practice and roles, and review the implications for the profession and their own development.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Investigate the potential for, and evaluate the implications of, extended roles in physiotherapy practice.
2. Discuss the concept of continual professional development and its effect on individual practitioners.
3. Discuss the implications of evidence based practice and clinical governance on physiotherapy practice in key settings.
4. Discuss a proposed service development within the context of an area of healthcare.
5. Reflect on their current skill base to underpin the development of an appropriate personal develoment plan.

Indicative Module Content

Leadership skills - change management and staff leadership.
Creativity relating to service development.
Current issues in physiotherapy practice provision including clinical effectiveness and Clinical governance,
Service improvement and the relationship with quality.
Present and future roles within Health and Social Care. teams including role development - eg extended scope, advanced practitioner.
Personal development, continuing professional development, reflection.
Technological advances in health care.
Application and modification of higher level techniques in the core areas of physiotherapy practice.
Legal responsibilities and ethical considerations of professional practice.
Awareness of local and national guidelines, standards and policies related to patient care.

In addition the module requires 80% attendance.
