To critically examine and discuss the impact of working with communities to improve health.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically analyse the impact of community development on the health of communities.
2. Discuss the range of skills and approaches which can be used when working with communities.
3. Explore the role of social capital in the context of health improvement.
4. Critically examine how interventions at a community level can impact on health.

Community development; models and tools of community development; health needs assessment; approaches to working with communties; community involvement; social capital; inequalities; empowerment; social inclusion; advocacy; lobbying; participatory engagement methods; lay concepts of health and ill health.
