Aims of Module

To increase critical awareness of health improvement and health promotion in the context of public health by evaluating the underpinning principles and concepts of health improvement and health promotion in different sectors.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss the relationship between health improvement, health promotion and public health.
2. Discuss the role and development of health improvement, health promotion and public health.
3. Critically examine the impact of inequalites on the health of individuals and communities.
4. Reflect on and critically evaluate a specific area of practice in relation to the theoretical underpinning of health improvement and health promotion.
5. Reflect on and evaluate the impact of the wider determinants of health on a specific area of practice.

Indicative Module Content

Evolution of health promotion and public health to the present day; definitions of health promotion and health improvement; underpinning principles of health promotion; social determinants of the health of the population; inequalities; introduction to the politics of health; influences of policy on health; applying the principles of health promotion;
