Prerequisites for Module

Registered diagnostic radiographer with proven competency in barium enema practice.
Completion of module HSM027 or equivalent.

Aims of Module

The aim of the module is to enable the diagnostic radiographer to demonstrate competence in interpretation and evaluation of barium enema investigation images as part of a double reporting profile.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Critically assess the factors involved in pattern recognition, image interpretation and reporting of clinical findings.
2. Interpret and evaluate the radiographic appearances of barium enema images.
3. Appraise and communicate radiological findings in a holistic manner relating to the patient’s clinical presentation.
4. Examine the medico-legal implications of radiographer led image reporting.
5. Critically assess the quality assurance factors of radiographer led barium enema image reporting.

The role of the barium enema in the diagnostic profile of the lower gastrointestinal system pathologies.
Principles of image perception and pattern recognition in barium enema imaging.
Foundations of image reporting.
Principles of barium enema reporting.
Radiological appearances of normal and pathological anatomy of the lower gastrointestinal system.
Patient management and onward referral.
A holistic approach to patient management.
Associated imaging modalities and interventions.
Medico-legal issues.
Sensitivity and specificity measures.
Audit and research as evaluative tools.

Mode of Delivery

This is a wholly work based module utilising the unique learning environment of the radiology setting. Academic underpining is provided by independent study of the relevent text, literature and research findings.
