Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge and comprehension of the anatomy and physiology of the lower gastro-intestinal system in addition to epidemiology and aetiology of common pathologies.
2. Critically assess normal and abnormal radiological appearances of the lower gastro-intestinal system.
3. Undertake barium enema investigations and demonstrate awareness of risks and possible complications of the procedure and modification of the examination technique to achieve the optimal diagnostic outcome for the patient.
4. Critically evaluate the holistic care of the patient, prior to, during and following the barium enema investigation, including the management of appropriate contrast agents and drugs associated with the procedure.
5. Appraise the principles of audit, research and continuous evaluation of radiographer performed barium enemas and the associated medico-legal implications.
