Aims of Module

To increase awareness of the importance of both primary and secondary research in evidence based health care and service provision. To facilitate student's development of critical analysis of research methods and processes - including and culiminating in discriminative and critical review of scientific literature.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Integrate and relate discriminative understanding of research methodologies to the critical analysis of research articles in a defined area of Physiotherapy practice.
2. Select and summarise the key features of methodological critique from research articles in a defined area of Physiotherapy practice.
3. Compare, contrast, grade and ultimately integrate key features of methodological critique of research articles in a defined area of Physiotherapy practice.
4. Formulate and present conclusions on the quality of evidence in the area under review based upon and supported by, reasoned and referenced argument.

Indicative Module Content

The research process; primary and secondary research; quantitative and qualitative methodologies; research questions/hypothesis; research aims and objectives; research tools and outcome measurement; ethical issues in research, data handling and statistical analysis; scientific writing; critical review of scientific literature.

Mode of Delivery

Delivery will be based on lectures, workshops and problem solving tutorials. Each student will be allocated a personal supervisor from whom he/she will receive tutorial support and relevant advice. The meetings will be initiated by the student and the supervisor will act as a facilitator.
