Aims of Module

To enable the students to evaluate current physiotherapy practice in a range of settings and review the implications for continuing professional development and future physiotherapy practice.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Define and critically analyse the nature of physiotherapy practice in a range of settings and with a variety of client groups.
2. Discuss the implications of evidence based practice, clinical effectiveness and the impact of clinical governance on physiotherapy practice in key settings.
3. Investigate the potential for, and evaluate the implications of, extended roles in physiotherapy practice.
4. Discuss the modifications, precautions and contraindications related to the administration of selected higher level physiotherapy techniques.
5. Examine and discuss the concept of continual professional development and its effect on individual practitioners.

Indicative Module Content

Current issues in physiotherapy practice provision including clinical effectiveness, evidence-based practice, local policy and protocol development, regulatory legislation, monitoring of quality, clinical governance and continual professional development. Application and modification of higher level techniques in musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neuro-rehabilitation therapy, ethical legal and safety issues. Wound care, integumentary, integrity, management of pain. The future of physiotherapy service and practice in the health service and other sectors, and the development in other specialist or role extended fields. The role within alternative models of care.The delegation of physiotherapy related services to appropriate members of staff. Present and future roles within Health and Social Care teams.
