Aims of Module
To extend the student's knowledge of current health and social policies and managerial practices which influence current physiotherapy practice and will shape future services to patients.
Learning Outcomes for Module
On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

Evaluate current health and social policies in relation to their impact on physiotherapy services.

Discuss the management philosophies (theories) used in the health environment to facilitate the provision of high quality services to patients.

Discuss the underlying philosophies of quality assurance and evaluate the relationship between QA and clinical governance.

Debate the pros and cons of interdisciplinary working.

Discuss the complexities involved in decision making, policy implementation and the management of change.

Indicative Module Content
Formulation and application of current health and social care structures; health development and prevention; issues relating to finance and rationing; public and private provision. Influencing and managing change, influencing policy and implementing new policy. Management and quality philosophies that underpin management practice within the health environment. Quality Assurance and quality control; current policies and procedures, standard setting, audit, accreditation and statutory inspection processes to include the Clinical Standards Board Implementation of quality assurance, human resource and financial management, exploring the complexities involved to include the perspective of service providers and users, clinical governance and evidenced based practice. The implications for physiotherapy. Interdisciplinary Practice; - the nature of professionalism and the impact on professions of legislation and organisation change, comparison of ethical frameworks and their implications for practice; roles, boundaries, skills overlap and skills mix, authority and leadership; conflict resolution, control and rationing of resources, links between inter-agency practice and service delivery co-ordination. Empowerment, information sharing with users/patients, evaluating inter-disciplinary and inter-agency working.

Mode of Delivery
This module will be delivered via key note lectures, and supplemented with tutorial sessions, seminars expert panels and student led presentations.
