Aims of Module

To enable the students to apply their understanding of the life cycle to the needs of specific client groups.

Learning Outcomes for Module

On completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:

1. Discuss normal life cycle events related to specific client groups.
2. Evaluate health improvement strategies for specific client groups.
3. Analyse the consequences of chronic disability throughout the life cycle for the individual, family and society.
4. Explain the modifications and adaptions to physiotherapy management necessary for specific client groups.
5. Discuss the interdisciplinary management of specific client groups.

Indicative Module Content

Sociological and psychological factors affecting a functional life at all ages. Health promotion issues for each client group. The range of settings appropriate for the management of specific client groups. Normal and impaired development from conception to early adulthood. Interdisciplinary management of the profoundly handicapped child. Reproductive health issues and the relevant anatomy and physiology. Mental health-common conditions and provision of service. Chronic pain. Diversity of client groups, ethnicity. Care of the elderly - the normal ageing process. Death and dying and terminal care. Chronic disability affecting different client groups, and its effects on the individual, family and community. Goal setting. Functional rehabilitation. The interdisciplinary management of client groups, and the role of the physiotherapist in the team. The roles of voluntary and public sector services. Legal responsibilities and ethical considerations of professional practice. Disability Act.
